Jane Blaufus

The life of an entrepreneur is often lonely because many of us are a one-person operation or in many cases, our support staff is virtual and we do not have the luxury of daily face-to-face communication. We often find ourselves spending a lot of time alone with our thoughts and problems, which many times leads us to blow the simple things out of proportion so that the issue feels like an elephant in the middle of the room. I do not know about the rest of you but when I try to hide that elephant from my sight it only seems to look bigger. So how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

One of the ways to look at a problem is to chunk it down into smaller pieces that are more manageable so you can focus on them individually instead of trying to tackle the problem or issue in its entirety.  One of the ways you can do this by following the KISS principle but in this case instead of it meaning ‘keep it simple silly’, I use the following breakdown:

K – Knowledge

Do you know what you are working with in this particular case?  Do you have the knowledge necessary to solve this particular problem? If you do not, where do you need to go and whom do you need to engage to help you find the necessary knowledge to solve the problem at hand? It is alright to ask for help!

I – Information

Do you have the necessary information at hand in order to work through the problem to find an answer to it?  If not, what do you need?  Is it more data, market research, financials, customer focus group feedback, industry analysis, competitive information, analytics, etc? Take a step back and ask yourself if you have the proper information or do you need more in order to chunk this problem down and analyze it.

S – Systems

Do you have the necessary systems and processes in place to help you get this problem rectified and back on track?  If not, could the lack of these things be part of the bigger problem and should they be tackled before the bigger problem can be solved?

S – Support

Do you have the necessary structure in place to help support you so that you can focus on solving the problem at hand instead of being the jack-of-all-trades and master at none?

The life of an entrepreneur can certainly bring with it a fair share of frustration and occasional hair pulling but it can also provide significant joy from seeing a project through to launch.  One of the ways you can help to minimize your frustration and the feeling of often being a one-person show and alone is by working with a business coach who provides a sounding board and support to help KISS.
